Does harmonic motion just mean that they are created with trig functions? That word harmonic always confuses me.

it means motion along a line where the force is proportional to the distance from some point on the line. "simple" in this context means you assume no friction etc so it goes on forever. eg a weight on a spring; with no friction, the weight will bounce up and down 1/
