Mathematician and toad expert Lionel Pencroft-Weems (1835-1912) developed a similar sign for designating amphibian breeding lines. However, he stopped using it as a gesture of respect to the Egyptians. His drinking may have had something to do with it as well.

A נבל also means a "a bad person" (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%D7%A0%D7%91%D7%9C …). I once heard a homiletic תורה explanation (forgot the source) that a נבל makes music so beautiful it makes everyone else sound bad in comparison. But if you make everyone around you bad, that makes you bad by definition
