The symbol for angular momentum changed several times and has been K or M. The earliest use of L in quantum theory seems to be Weyl (1928) and it was gradually adopted universally https://archive.org/stream/quantumtheoryofa029235mbp#page/n211/mode/2up … See:-https://hsm.stackexchange.com/questions/728/why-did-angular-momentum-get-the-letter-l …

Exactly! In this same manner Fred Krepschutte (1936-1998) influenced the Ford crankshaft replacement protocol used by hundreds of Iowa mechanics in the early 1970’s. The key is in how much pressure to apply to the pulley wrench. A classic move.

Somehow I also see this as just a vector space over complex numbers if the basis are denoted by partial differentiation. Why there is a (-i) factor is maybe since it is seen as one of the generators of the algebra of SO(3) Lie group.

So... How was angular momentum called before quantum mechanics?

Why using 1/i instead of -i ?
-
I think -1 isn't used so as not to change the sign notation for those in bracket.

Couldn't you use i instead of 1/i and flip the signs of the two things in the brackets?

I took some quantum mechanics classes, and they denote angular momentum with a lower-case "omega" (looks like a cursive "w"). I thought it had something to do with the mathematician La Grange...
