I = moment of inertia w = angular velocity Angular momentum = I*w. 1 = before the change 2 = after it Conservation of angular momentum: I(1)*w(1) = I(2)*w(2) As the moment of inertia (I) decreases, the angular velocity increases. Figure skaters use this.

The only thing I quibble with in this animation is that there is energy transferred to the spinning when he pulls the string, making the effect look more exaggerated.
