The entropy of a closed system increases over time. I’m being pedantic, but people forget (or ignore) the closed part to make all sorts of bad arguments.

It’s really just statistics. There is only one way for the nice formation of dots on the left to occur. But there are many ways for the dots to look disordered like on the right. If you pick a formation randomly, probably going to see one of the many disordered formations!

And yet life on Earth has become progressively more complicated and developed intelligence. I guess it depends on what time scale we look at.

That is because that progressive organizativon was made at the expense of energy, like the heat coming from the sun. In other words, if the disorder decreases at the expense of heat, the total entropy still increase.
