Why are there at most 9 cubes, when you can represent any positive integer as a sum with 1^3 in each term?
You're misinterpreting the theorem. It states that any integer can be expressed as a sum of 9 cubes or fewer, not that you can't express an integer as a sum of more than 9 cubes.

After wasting some CPU power, I postulate that the largest number being the sum of at most 8 positive cubes is 454 and the largest number with at most 7 positive cubes is 8.042. Not (yet) sure if there is a largest number with 6 cubes... 1.290.740 is a good candidate though.
