In the 70s, while searching for a way to provide subtitles for the deaf, BBC engineers devised a system to transmit text on previously unused parts of the TV signal. This became Teletext This week’s paper is about extending it to deliver software to TVs https://fermatslibrary.com/s/telesoftware-adding-intelligence-to-teletext#email-newsletter …pic.twitter.com/tFk8549JX5

This fascinating paper refers to a very early incarnation of telesoftware, not the type that ran on BBC Micros. The telesoftware referenced ran on a Signetics 2650 processor. Here is a page of the code for the Mortgage Calculator retrieved from a 1979 videotape:pic.twitter.com/a59wtGCvcg

Previous to this development television viewers relied upon close relatives to relay the audio portion of the programming. I said, “PREVIOUS TO THIS DEVELOPMENT TELEVISION VIEWERS RELIED UPON CLOSE RELATIVES TO RELAY THE AUDIO PORTION OF THE PROGRAMMING, DAMMIT!”

That photograph must have been from an early version. Here in Germany I mostly read the Teletext of @orfonline the Austrian broadcasting company. It included assembler courses (both 8052 and IBM-PC)

Teletext was the system, Ceefax was the BBC branding & first user, while ITV came later & branded it ORACLE or Teletext Ltd depending upon audience.

I used this back in the day, when it was adopted by the BBC Micro as a peripheral which delivered the Teletext pages & weekly streamed software, although you needed excellent reception as there was almost no error correction for bad frames. Meaning I had to spend aged debugging.pic.twitter.com/FebmbPMLFM

Broadcasted software for the BBC ? Man, we didn't have that in France, only 5'1/4 floppies :) meanwhile Archimedes rocked. Best computer ever.
