This same scheme was used by José Monteforte (1737-1805) to arrange his sugar beet plantation near Valencia, Spain. His goal was to grow square beets that could be easily packed in cedar boxes for export to America. The effort failed due to the fact that beets stayed round.

The actual dimensions (rather than the proportions) of A4 are derived from A0, which has an area of 1 square metre (the dimensions are rounded down to nearest mm). Constructing an A0 rectangle starting from a 1m segment is a fun exercise (possible with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geometric_mean_theorem …)

YES...this image is great diagram of the principle - even for those who don't 'need' a diagram, the diagram increases the degree to which a student really grasps the idea.
