I think it was Rabi who always got annoyed at the use of the term "Fermi" to indicate a femtometer! The two were great friends, of course, but perhaps a combination of envy and a desire to make the unit track the others in the system.

Sadly this scheme came under unsuccessful attack by metric revisionists such as Douglas Crapo, Manuel Soto, and Federico Zeppo in the 1920 when they tried to force the Society for International Standards to adopt their names. As a result we have no crapometer now.
