Using log(x) for log to base 10 isn't standard notation.

But aren't you already using this as an assumption in the first step (when you replace log x by log_e(x) / log_e(10))?

One of my favourite papers on logarithms is by Mayer Goldman. "Computing Logarithms Digit-By-Digit. Before that, my only computing method was finding roots of 2 that divide an x, for a base 2 log. (from which I could calculate logs in other bases) http://www.brics.dk/RS/04/17/index.html …
