In 1612 Galileo used a Helioscope to observe and draw the spots on the surface of the Sun. These observations were made at the same time of day so that the motion of the spots across the Sun can easily be seen. Here is an animation of Galileo's sunspot drawings.pic.twitter.com/aItQGDzW7L

The number of spots on Sun's surface has been continuously monitored for more than 400 years and is still used today as a proxy for Solar activity.pic.twitter.com/nyFpAMZjtT

So this is the case for depressed activity causing the “little ice age” rt? How valid is the proxy btw

I love the simplicity in this. A brilliant mind utilizing the tools he has. I've always worked with this in mind, "a bad carpenter blames his tools." I can accomplish a lot more with a lot less. Still use my drone for aerial footage though because I'm sick of flapping my arms.

Does anyone know if he had a theory about them?

Extensive theories. In short, he concluded that sunspots were features on the sun's surface (not orbiting it), and consequently that the sun rotated on its axis with a period of about 30 days. Both novel findings and contrary to accepted theory of the time.

Is there any timestamp in there? Had someone calculate solar rotation based on the drawings? :) .. searching before posting, Wiki needs to be updated! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_rotation#Using_sunspots_to_measure_rotation …

Galileo himself proposed the rotation of the sun based on his observations and measured its period. Here's a more detailed article about his observations, theories and the scientific and political consequences. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Letters_on_Sunspots …

In 1612 Galileo was not using a helioscope but was observing the sun directly with a telescope with darkened lenses

And only 200 years later Wilhelm derKunst (1764-1821) refuted Galileo’s observations most effectively by counting sunspots only at night in his small observatory in Worms. He’s also responsible for inventing “fruit at the bottom” yoghurt.
