2⁸²⁵⁸⁹⁹³³-1 is the largest known prime number and was discovered yesterday. It's substantially easier to find primes of the form 2ᵖ-1, also called Mersenne Primes. Here's why: https://fermatslibrary.com/s/a-really-trivial-proof-of-the-lucas-lehmer-test#email-newsletter …pic.twitter.com/VLGeIhqIiX

Would you install an app on your laptop/phone and keep it for 1 year to help find the next biggest prime number (no noticeable performance drop because of it)?

I would if it had been vetted for security, and if the data usage was low.

That isn’t practical but charging a minor fee , say cents/supporter, could be to have servers continually run the calculation 🧮 ( considering prime number theorem + ...) and spit out the next prime number on a web page/screen. So, no to the app;yes to machine power.

If you cant join them, then beat them. Stand on Euler's shoulders and go for a bigger prime. Only pen & paper needed. Going by his prodigious output, it must have been a 3 minute meditation for him just after morning Tea dictated to his son, possibly. https://arxiv.org/pdf/math/0507401.pdf …pic.twitter.com/IaTWLTeuVw

For considerably more than $5, yes. A lot of money is offered for finding large primes. I'm not a fan of some organization getting a big payout using work others did.
