John William Strutt, 3rd Baron Rayleigh, was a Nobel laureate who made extensive contributions to the field of Physics. He discovered Argon, described "Rayleigh Scattering" (explaining why the sky is blue) and his book "The Theory of Sound" published in 1877 is still used todaypic.twitter.com/lBBWtEAxEQ

Here's another still used today. E J Routh's series on statics and dynamics, here dynamics of particle. Routh was the guy who beat Maxwell in the Cambridge Tripos. (At a time when it was probably at it's most fiendishly difficult before or since). Routh was 1st Maxwell was 2nd.pic.twitter.com/21kh3ENLo2

A similar example of very precise experimental data playing major role in the history of science is Kepler's discovery of his laws by rejecting the possibility of an error of 8/60 degree in Tycho de Brahe's data - …http://galileoandeinstein.physics.virginia.edu/1995/lectures/morekepl.html …

A legend. He determined why the sky was blue using only dimensional analysis when he was 29. I learned this yesterday by coincidence, from "Colors of the Sky", Bohren and Fraser. :-)

Interestingly, argon was discovered by examining really miniscule variation in collected experimental data, namely it was observed that nitrogen extracted from chemical compounds is about 0.5% lighter than "atmospheric nitrogen".
