I guess the shortest path to Dijkstra's heart was through his algorithm.
Dijkstra's last position was at @UTAustin. In 1991, when I was a CS student, I was visiting a TA and saw him slowly pacing a long, isolated, dimly lit corridor. He was deep in thought, don't think he noticed me passing by. I dared not interrupt his thought process to say hi! :)

Yes and no. He just didn't need an external one because he could simulate one in his head much faster than he could give an external one instructions on what to do. (Well, ok, I don't know for sure if that's what he did, but surely he could do it if I can)
