Ostensibly, it’s to encourage young researchers. In the early days, the limit didn’t exist, but everyone who had been awarded was under 40, so when they decided to restrict it, they chose that age as to not exclude any past winners.

Why plotting the mean and not all awardees age per year. I believe there’s quite some standar deviation each year.
