How exactly do we know these masses? I mean, could it be exactly 2/3 and the error is due to our currently "bad" measurements?

On the contrary, the formula was first discarded (actually added a correction term, now removed) because the experiments in early 80 had a wrong mass for tau.

You are absolutely right! It's even closer... m_e = 0.5109989461 MeV/c^2 m_muon = 105.6583745 MeV/c^2 m_tau = 1776.86 MeV/c^2 => 0.66666051241... (I was using the old value from 2012 https://journals.aps.org/prd/pdf/10.1103/PhysRevD.86.010001 …, page 592)

Why is this interesting? Some arbitrary operations on values of some properties of some particles yield number similar as some arbitrary constant

It was latter discovered that the same relationship occurs with some of the quarks. Someone else in the thread linked to a paper on arXiv that goes into some more detail. It wasn’t hard to follow
