The more I read queer romance, the more I am certain that moment is both foundational and revolutionary. Storytelling like this teaches us pathways to new lives in a way that I think nonfiction never can, because stories are intimate things and joy is intimate and personal. 4/

Yes, the happily ever after/happily for now of a relationship is necessary for queer genre romance. What I'm beginning to think, though, is this moment of deeper revelation is paired with it, a necessary precondition and product of it. That queer joy can structure a life. 5/
