Dang this was a nice read. I'm also excited for the future of games; we have a lot of work to do to keep making it more inclusive and accessible, but I feel like we're getting better every day. We're so much stronger with diverse voices!

We definitely are. Thanks so much for reading!

Thanks for the reflections. I know I probably shouldn't be shocked by the lack of consideration of one's assumptions about audience from a game designer, but yet it still is shocking to me! Just some more evidence that straight, white, male is still the "default".
-
Thanks for reading! And, to be fair, this was a guy who was making games in the mid-80s, but yes, that kind of thinking is still very common.

Definite reason why we need more diversity in the gaming industry. Personally, I like exploring other worlds -- give me more viewpoints to experience than just 'CIS white male'.

Nice article! Though I'm surprised that you didn't mention the uncomfortable and strange long segue-way he spent tearing down the character of another developer. It was the most bizarre talk I've ever attended at any GDC.
-
That was awful, I agree. I deliberately left it out because I don’t want to in any way spread the things he said, and it didn’t seem essential to the overall thrust of my piece. But I understand what you’re saying.

This is all well and good but video game companies seem to understand the industry better than most hard core gamers like yourself. Most people get a grand total of 10 hours a week to play video games IF they are lucky. They are not interested in a complex story.
-
What game are you talking about? Night in the Woods? Night in the Woods was very successful.
-
I don’t doubt that it was. Don’t get me wrong I love innovation and a great story with interesting characters. Except when I only have an hour or so a day I just to blow something up or play something with short matches. As I told my students, if you want compelling read a book.
-
I...okay. I don’t understand what that has to do with the piece I wrote. I mean I think we need different kinds of games that do different things whether people play games for an hour a day or five.
-
And to not expect more of games would be sad. I respect games as a medium too much for that. I don’t think they’re going to stop making games where you just blow shit up. But please don’t let those be the only games.
-
Matpat actually did a review on this a number of years ago. I can provide a link if you like. Don't get me wrong I love innovation. I just don't have the time or the money to venture out of my comfort zone. Case in point "Life is Strange" is sitting in my PS4 library unplayed.
-
That’s absolutely fine for you. Play what you want and what you prioritize with your limited gaming time. But let’s not pretend there’s no appetite for games that do different things.
