I have a problem with this author completely ignoring Skyward Sword, where, altho not player controlled, Zelda has a very active role.

She's off saving the world and doing her part to seal away Demise three steps ahead of Link the entire game.
-
Impa openly mocks Link for not catching up to her and Zelda faster.
-
Not to say she didn't get 'damseled' in the end, but it was very brief. Windwaker is also an example where Tetra/Zelda played a very...
-
Important role as well. WW may treat her character the worst when she's revealed as Zelda, but she has an independent arc from Link thru...
-
Most of the game. And she's still the only Zelda who actively JOINS Link for the fight with Ganon.
-
It's misguided to think Zelda's role hasn't been improving this the series, and while I really want a game where she's the star...
-
It's hard to play this game and feel like she got the short end of the stick again. This is the most development she's had since WW.

This definitely applies to the series overall but it sells Zelda a little short given this is the most narrative complexity she's had so far
-
I'm definitely not on board with the idea that unless zelda is literally an armed fighter that her role is automatically passive
-
after link (functionally speaking) dies, zelda goes to confront ganon alone and holds him off for a century. We're told she's "fighting".
-
We don't directly see it but it's never sold as anything but an active, voluntary struggle. She's not kidnapped.
-
And I don't know if the author is speaking figuratively, but the scene with zelda and the guardians doesn't play out how it's described here
-
BUT!! This is true of the series as a whole. The Zelda team have this pervasive idea that zelda can't have TOO active a role in any game
-
Ultimately, they've decided that no matter how active her role, there has to come a time where you bail her out. It's wrongheaded

what about sheik, linkle, windwaker, and her role as playable character in warriors?
-
Those examples don't make the series exempt from criticism for using a sexist trope
-
even the HW example?
-
anyway i want to be symathetic to much of that site, but not everyone is going to see use of trophe all that bad
-
Yes, even with HW. No game is exempt from criticism. Tropes on their own aren't bad, but lazy sexist ones like distress damsels are
-
don't remember her being distressed in HW. and any playable character in a dynasty-style setup is pretty strong
-
I meant that her not being distressed in HW doesn't excuse the other games for using the trope. Apologies that wasn't clear
-
Doesn't she represent the triforce of wisdom? She's a political figure. She also leads the final line of defense in twilight princess.
