I wrote some brief thoughts on The Martian, the best film I've seen in a long time.http://femfreq.tumblr.com/post/133869812094/some-brief-thoughts-on-the-martian …

@femfreq what bothered me, is that no women of color were in the movie helping save the day, let alone the main character to be saved.

@TheOriginalLurk This is a problem that we can do much more to address than we could for problems on the other side of the goddamn world.

@TheOriginalLurk How can you remove a speck of dust from your brother's eye when all the time there's a great plank in your own?

@TheOriginalLurk It means it's hypocritical to call others out for their issues when you haven't done anything to address your issues.

@femfreq funny also to see that the book never describe the main character apart his name/gender but they still casted a white dude...

@TheOriginalLurk @Sirithang @femfreq its surprising that they cast a big name actor.. almost like the director enjoyed his performance...

@femfreq thought that too; recast the main role as different gender/race. Imagine @TherealTaraji @LucyLiu or @iamrashidajones as Watney!

@cirquelar @femfreq @iamrashidajones how would that make the movie better or worse, its about helping eachother not the sex of the cast.

@spartin01919 it would show a world not purely run by white males, unlike every other movie, & provide positive role models to women/POC.

@spartin01919 which to me, would make the movie better. Or at least, make the movie more inclusive than it was.

@cirquelar so the story and underlying theams would become more engaging with no white males? I just think syory is more important than cast

@spartin01919 I didn't say no white males, I said a non-white male lead. If story > cast, why are you complaining at the suggestion?

@spartin01919 It's more nuanced than that. Name the last few Mars movie leads: all white males (Sinise, Kilmer, Schwarzenneger, Kitsch).
