Sicario takes what would have been a great emotionally complex female protagonist and undermines her via repeated victimization and abuse.

.@femfreq At this point, I'm convinced that anything Anita doesn't like is going to be pretty awesome or ground-breaking.

@femfreq But the movie has great sympathy for her because both she and the audience are kept at arms length about the mission & information.

@femfreq Much of the film is also taken from her perspective so we see what she sees and understand her thinking. She's not undermined imo.

@femfreq Respectfully disagree. Had they made her a "wolf" she'd be as morally compromised as the people in charge. Morality isn't weakness.

@femfreq agree and disagree. to create a gritty view of the world it was necessary for the protagonist to show that via experiences.

@femfreq it's also a very specific gendered problem that *I* think *should* be shown in media. Not all "strong" characters are non-victims

@femfreq I just came back from seeing it, and that was exactly my perception. Also having only 1 female character does not help.

@bekokstover @femfreq yes, this was the primary problem. A more diverse cast would lessen the impact of one woman being beaten down

@femfreq I think that's the exact point of the movie. She's never one of the boys; her desire to know the truth seen as pedantic/a weakness.
