I liked Maleficent much more than I thought I would. The film did a lot to subvert some of the traditional sexist fairy tale tropes.

.@femfreq My favorite part of any film is the subverting of traditional sexist tropes.

@femfreq I really liked the movie's intentions...I still thought it was rather poorly written in a lot of areas though.

@femfreq Like why was she always named "Maleficent", even as the queen of sunshine and daisies. The name quite literally means "Evil Doer".

@femfreq I have a feeling you don't know much about Fairy Tales outside of Disney.

@femfreq I thought it tried for the same sort of twist that Frozen did, but did it less well.

@femfreq I think it works surprisingly well as an allegorical story about recovering from sexual abuse.

@femfreq I still can't get over how it's the story of a victim of FGM coming to terms with her gender identity masquerading as a fairy tale.
