Hard to believe this ATARI Home Computers commercial with a surprisingly feminist message was broadcast on TV in 1983http://bit.ly/12l787P

@femfreq @MissCharlez actually it’s not. Computation and typing has been in female hands first and got more and more men’s business.

@femfreq Not totally strange - Alda was well known as a feminist and second wave discourse was common in media. IMHO things are worse today

@katbat67 Of course things are "worse" today because more & more people recognize feminism as the fraud it is. @femfreq #feminism #fem2

@femfreq @G33kGrrly Computers weren't initially gendered. If anything they were initially thought of as feminine in a lot of cultures.

@joewebbuk @femfreq Yes. Manufacturers thought that men would look down on using the keyboard because it was too much like a typewriter.

@G33kGrrly @femfreq This association still stands for a lot of w.class men. Masculine gendering of computer geekery is a middle class thing.

@femfreq isn't this commercial before the social blowback against feminism made it a bad word?

@femfreq actually not that hard to believe. feminism was pretty big in the 80s. sadly media took three steps back from there.
