I wonder how many door dash users know this.
-
If the users knew it then that would defeat the purpose. None of them want to tip the platform.

I mean yes, this is fucked up. But this is also basically how the tipped minimum wage works in restaurants?
-
No it’s not. They get a set wage plus tips. At the end of the night the manager doesn’t count their tips and subtract that from their set wage.

I try to always tip in cash. Never the app.
-
I want to do this now. But I worry that for apps where they force you to tip up front, will the app let you enter "zero"? And will the driver understand that they will be receiving a tip later in cash? I hate the idea that they'll think they're getting nothing, even temporarily.

This is also basically how tipped/non-tipped wages work in restaurants, right? Restaurant owners get to underpay, have workers direct their resentment and customers for tips, and pretend prices are really lower than they are. It's why higher min wage laws are essential.
-
Higher min wages wouldn’t solve the problem, you’d need to equalize tipped and untipped min wages.

As a driver for DD in a busy metro area, I average 20-25 dollars an hour even with this scam so it doesn’t bother me that much.
-
but you could be making more even more if they weren’t stealing your tips
