It remains to be seen if South Korea will actually do anything in the way of making future incidents less likely and/or less deadly. Romania sure didn't do a thing in the (exactly) 7 years since the Colectiv disaster. Heck, our *hospitals* burn down with alarming regularity.

Can't help but notice that the President of South Korea went to the disaster site right away, dressed in a paramedic(?) uniform, and never blamed the victims, or anyone else. Yes, it can happen anywhere. What matters is how we handle it. Do we want to solve problems or not?

Crossposting to other platforms like Webtoon and Tapas is a good idea (get those extra eyes on your work), but you should always have some sort of hub site that's fully under your control so the platforms can't screw you over. Casually reposts this page from How to Webcomic

In case this site dies post-takeover and you need to get in touch with me, simply speak your question to a crow and give it three hazelnuts. Your answer will come whispered on the winds a day later. Please be aware I do not check my bird inbox on Fridays.

I'm making plans to lock and anonymize my Twitter account. Not expecting to actually pull the trigger anytime soon, but things are changing.

Google search is becoming one of those dying malls. You still go there out of habit, but once you get there, none of it is what you want. You can remember when it was a useful place to visit, but now it's weirdly hollow and you leave without getting what you came for

You realize there are people on Twitter who actually grew up in a Communist regime, right?
Quote Tweet
🧵Communism is not "free time and nothing else" Communism means business. It means hard work. It means long hours. It means sacrifice. In a Communist society, the businessman embodies Socialist values. Under Communism, we will work harder, longer, and more productively than ever!

Kids today watch ‘good’ TV with ‘great’ episodes but truly great TV is 200 episodes and 40 of them are the worst things you’ve ever seen

sensitivity check: is the TV-Tropes-ism "Sci Fi Ghetto" to mean the cultural stigmatisation of SF problematic? Not asking whether or not it's accurate, just whether it's Bad to use the word. (Validest opinions will be from members of groups who've been literally ghettoised)

The saddest thing for me about modern tech’s long spiral into user manipulation and surveillance is how it has just slowly killed off the joy that people like me used to feel about new tech. Every product Meta or Amazon announces makes the future seem bleaker and grayer. 1/n

I've been asked if I've been saved by Jesus twice via phone after routine transactions and was tricked by handshake twice into some dude praying over me. Y'all Christians need to chill and keep that shit away from me.

"the law presumes that computers operate correctly" - a terrifying sentence
Quote Tweet
The law in England and Wales presumes that computers operate correctly – a decision that directly contributed to the miscarriages of justice in the #PostOfficeScandal. Our briefing note on this presumption has been published by @IALS_law through @SASNews. journals.sas.ac.uk/deeslr/article

Yesterday, I attended a conference at which an influential financier shared this unpublished map. Look at it. The estimated death toll is 2-3 *billion*; the timeframe is 20-30 years (previously: 50). Segments of the elite have simply 'written off' large parts of the Global South.

Microsoft/Copilot, l’assistant à l’écriture de code, pompe du code libre sans respecter ni la licence ni citer l’auteur ⤵️ On pourrait le renommer Microsoft/Parasite ou ça serait un pléonasme ?
Quote Tweet
@github copilot, with "public code" blocked, emits large chunks of my copyrighted code, with no attribution, no LGPL license. For example, the simple prompt "sparse matrix transpose, cs_" produces my cs_transpose in CSparse. My code on left, github on right. Not OK.
