  2. but when you read a romance, you mostly get the perspective of the people falling in love, so by the end it's positive whereas when you meet those characters in the next book, maybe the POV character is like "that person's kind of a jerk," and that shift always makes me smile

  3. I mean, I also like it when they're friends (or, as is frequently the case, siblings who more or less get along)

  4. I love when the protagonists of different books in a romance series have strained or contentious relationships with each other

  5. probably those commenters love THEIR families. some of them, anyway. they care about dogs, probably. but people they don’t know? not so much

  7. those commenters are the people I want to force to read this book. or to hear from one of these families and know the unconscionable suffering they have endured

  8. but I keep thinking about the comments section of my local paper every time there’s an article about our refugee community. people are enraged that they get (very limited) assistance with rent. “nobody ever helped ME with rent,” they write

  9. life is hard everywhere. the volume of terrible news or history that you can expose yourself to is basically infinite. nobody has the capacity

  10. I am still struggling with the question of how much we owe it to each other to learn about atrocities in the world

  11. I haven’t even gotten to the part of the book that’s actually about the DRC! The first part is about Rwanda, and boy is there a lot I didn’t know

  12. this book (Dancing in the Glory of Monsters by Jason Stearns) is really a feat of writing. it’s utterly gripping. gotta read it in small chunks, though

Honestly I thought people describing this process were joking until I looked it up. This process seems like it appeals to the exact people who make politics unbearable and only them (but only if they're also able-bodied and extroverted and financially secure enough for this)

  19. the layers can get more recursive if you want (Alizhan knows that Ev knows that Alizhan knows...) but mostly I just love this little moment of denial on Ev’s part. and of course she later comes to accept that Alizhan is right

  20. at many, many other moments in Ev’s POV, she reminds herself/you of Alizhan’s ability, but it conveniently slips her mind here

  21. and I love this moment because you, as reader, can accept Ev’s version if you want. But you can also think—as Ev does /not/—hey, wait a minute, Alizhan can /read minds/. Her list is not conjecture; she knows exactly who wants to kiss Ev.
