I recognize the effort of putting yourself on other’s shoes but please don’t put women as a reason to complain. I’ve worked many weekends as a PhD, postdoc and faculty because I had to do that even if it’s not written. Male colleagues who don’t work on weekends may not get far.

I asked my advisor to stop writing that I work during weekends in recommendation letter. Why? Do they need to know that I’m a woman able to work on weekends? But some others may think that I don’t plan very well my work so I need to work extra. I don’t need wrong assumptions

Just submit the Friday before. There will be always such a problem. Anticipation has to be taught even to junior members.

The deadline isn't the big issue. The fundamental problem is the work culture in academia. Why is it automatically assumed that you should be working until the deadline?

I’m afraid that’s just human nature. Work expands to fill the available time (Parkinson’s law), and since we are all preemptive uniprocessors, earliest deadline first is the optimal scheduling algorithm.

This is indeed correct in terms of work/life balance and deadlines during the weekdays are much better from a family life perspective. However, I will like to add another minority-related issue: there are places in the world where Friday is a holiday and Saturday is a working day
