Calling someone on their all-male panel, board, or team is a lot like pointing out broccoli in somebody’s teeth. It’s super awkward for both of us, and it gets a -lot- worse if the person stands there making excuses rather than getting on with fixing it.

Please reach out if you know of any good male data scientists as I've just realised our seminar series has 100% female speakers booked in for this semester

I'm noticing more public wi-fi's that block / bungle / quietly degrade service through my VPN but provide totally acceptable connectivity without it. Is this a thing? Should I migrate from to something else? Do I just need to reseat the flux on my warp capacitor?

Going back and forth between reading sci-fi future tech (‘the engine stuttered at first, but my hardwired AI rewrote the OS in real time and it smoothed out’) and reviewing real life bioinformatics code (‘chromosome 0? What’s that? Halt and catch fire!’) is pretty jarring.

It's the year 2020, and we're still finding buffer overflows in programs written in C. Fortunately, those programs are only esoteric, rarely installed programs like... <checks notes> sudo.

Don’t act all smug just because you’ve never used multi volume tar files and pipes to get around a file size limitation on a legacy filesystem.

I was not expecting a book that opened with ‘family space adventure in a utopian future where people are mature about relationships’ to end with ‘prisoners arguing philosophy to figure out who dies in the morning’ but here we are.

I’m rebooting Dungeonomics with our dystopian future - crime, AI, health, technology, inequality, information warfare, robots, and, of course, money. Here’s the first piece where we look at life in the future company town, the Arcology.

There is a company whose Boston office is known, nationally, to be a hostile pit of sexism, racism, and anti-queer bigotry. Everybody knows. As long as the numbers stay strong, the ‘Boston Boy’s Club’ is allowed to persist. Does your organization have a boy’s club?

There is a lot of real crap bioinformatics getting posted about similarities between the genome of the new coronavirus and ... well ... all kinds of stuff that humans are afraid of (bats, HIV, bioweapons, ...) Please take all of that with a healthy dose of skepticism.

I’m super happy that somebody did this study. Between 60% and 70% of online traffic is computer programs pretending to be people.

Still far too few women in biotech, and progress is still far too slow. Hooray for , , and Nancy Hopkins’s initiative to ensure more women are at every leadership table! and I strongly support. Everyone should!
