Imagine if social media algorithms optimized our content intake to bring out the best in us, instead of optimizing for "engagement". Better yet -- imagine if *you* were in charge of configuring how the algorithms around you affected what you think about & how you spent your time

Optimizing for a narrow, opportunistic definition of "engagement" is basically the same as seeking to waste the most human potential, with maximum efficiency. Let's reverse that. Algorithmic content consumption should be a tool for maximally realizing human potential.

I think about this *all the time.* There are recurrences in what I read that indicate thoughts & connections I would write if I just got prompted at the right moment

incentives are not well aligned for platform owners to do that. It will probably have to be a different entity

subscription based social media would have the incentives to make that happen.

Corporations will never give us such autonomy. They are too self interested in profit and competition, not in improving their clients.

engagement = profit If we were to own our data and be able to take it with us to another service, we could then have services competing to deliver a better experience everything starts with us owning our data

Have the users own their data and let algorithms compete. This is going to be a great sight.
