Optimizing for a narrow, opportunistic definition of "engagement" is basically the same as seeking to waste the most human potential, with maximum efficiency. Let's reverse that. Algorithmic content consumption should be a tool for maximally realizing human potential.

engagement = profit If we were to own our data and be able to take it with us to another service, we could then have services competing to deliver a better experience everything starts with us owning our data
