This happens to apply to AI too: there are those who are interested in AI as a means to understand how intelligence works -- find out the nature of what we are -- and there are those who seek to create AI because they see it as a powerful, world-changing technology

I'm in the Applied AI camp.
If understanding occurs on the way to (AI) applications, so much the better.
(I do find understanding fascinating though)

Not really smart or anything...but I prefer to know what this mind thing is...what is thinking...what is learning..etc..there are a lot of smart people who build amazing things and change the world...I just want to know. Sounds selfish but that's what makes me truly happy.
