The smartest people I meet tend to fall into one of two categories -- those who want to understand the world, and those who want to transform it
This happens to apply to AI too: there are those who are interested in AI as a means to understand how intelligence works -- find out the nature of what we are -- and there are those who seek to create AI because they see it as a powerful, world-changing technology
Is this dichotomy meant to imply that those you know who wish to transform the world do not wish, first, to understand it?
No -- it's the difference between open-ended exploration, and gaining knowledge in order to achieve specific goal. In the first case, understanding is the goal, in the latter, it is a tool serving another goal.
Want to understand, never do. And listen to jazz which shows that everything is just improvisation.
Don't you think we need to understand the problems in the current world to transform it?
Isn't the former usually a prerequisite for the latter?
