In CS, when the need for a low-level, tedious task has been eliminated by better tools, everyone immediately stops doing it, but people keep *talking* about doing it for years. It becomes a totem skill.

When I hear this sentiment, I go down the 'fundamental' path. I don’t need to reach QFT; typically even the most Real Programmers™, who use assembly, know little about electromagnetism (and got enlightened, or turned off, at that point).
