It starts with a few of the old guard using it for gate keeping ("if you don't do X, you don't *really* understand Y"), then it gets repeated by generation after generation of newcomers as a way to signal expertise ("real programmers do X").

Same in law. You still run across old litigators who say the only way to really learn a case is to review all the documents in paper form, page by page, preferably in an unheated warehouse in North Dakota for days on end. Builds character.

I started my career 30 years ago, with tools like awk and sed. Even today regex is alive and kicking. Some fantastic tools do survive generations. Not to belittle the point made by you.
