Whether deliberately or inadvertently I don't know, but the communication & sharing dynamics of Facebook have evolved to become a social engineering project with incredibly deleterious effects across multiple countries and cultures.
It's seriously heartbreaking to see smart people, who do not have bad intentions, dedicate their skills and energy to building that system, while choosing not to care (or even think) about the consequences.
I don't think good intentions should be taken for granted.

When you're working on a problem, particularly in tech, it's very easy to acquire tunnel vision and concentrate solely on the puzzle you need to solve, and completely lose sight of the wider picture. It's not really a choice, it happens automatically if you aren't careful.
And this will keep happening as long as software companies pick developers for their ability to obsessively chip away at a problem with laser-like focus.
