Academia, or the art of crediting individual hero-like figures with collective achievements years in the making. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the "heroes" are those doing the credit assignment, and that their careers and status depend on this view of progress.
Much like language is not primarily a communication channel, but an affordance -- a tool to act on the world -- beliefs are not primarily about truth or accuracy, but about effectiveness. If a belief leads to a world where you have a higher status, you shall believe.
The question of ‘credendity’ (Shoud I believe?) is complex and cannot be answered with a simplistic precept.

This is so true about language! So many situations where the set of truths relevant to a situation matter far less than the sequence of words exchanged. Thoughts, beliefs and ideas can only impact the world through words and actions, but interpretation adds SO much noise!!
This is why subjective experience is relevant to our unfolding. Although it might be fundamentally rooted in matter, once it leads to conscious awareness, it's a whole new game.
