Academia, or the art of crediting individual hero-like figures with collective achievements years in the making. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the "heroes" are those doing the credit assignment, and that their careers and status depend on this view of progress.
Much like language is not primarily a communication channel, but an affordance -- a tool to act on the world -- beliefs are not primarily about truth or accuracy, but about effectiveness. If a belief leads to a world where you have a higher status, you shall believe.
Uhhh... same or worse happens in real life, especially business and especially Silicon Valley where forget heroes, it's more cult leader status conferred to some entrepreneurs. But I understand your gripe. I'd say it's more human nature than any particular walk of life
Credit assignment inside large companies works completely differently than in academia. It has its issues, but it's way more aware of the collective nature of progress and way more results-oriented (instead of "only thing that matters is who first did something kinda similar").
This really resonates with me and I've been thinking about it for a long time. Do you have any advice for a depressed postdoc very unhappy with the academic track, but who loves the "intellectual freedom", teaching and mentoring (that academia is *supposed* to shine in)?

I once got the advice from a big shot, that to establish my career, I had to associate my name with some discovery (i.e., building your brand). I later realized that he had done just that by taking credit for a major work that he did not contribute to.
