Pattern I'm seeing a lot in science: looking at a slice of a system (often a scalar measure), observing some correlation between that slice and the behavior of the whole system, then casting the slice as either the causal driver of the whole, or a complete characterization of it

But the whole idea of thinking or arriving into conclusions is this "projection" to simplicity. Maybe to cut the cost of thinking when in an emergency. Thinking is very costly. Makes us unhappy.

Good point. Correlation doesnt automaticaly imply causation. But something I've seen in few cases, especially when spread of the slice in consideration is wide is that correlation sometimes does imply causation at certain ranges/quartiles. So maybe worth checking than ruling out?
