Pattern I'm seeing a lot in science: looking at a slice of a system (often a scalar measure), observing some correlation between that slice and the behavior of the whole system, then casting the slice as either the causal driver of the whole, or a complete characterization of it

We all long for simple explanations to complex real-world problems. Too bad they are usually completely inaccurate.

Seems like there is a widespread assumption that reductionism is the only way to do science. From a writing papers/ communication POV it does offer advantages. Not sure what an alternative narrative is. Something I struggled with in my New Kind of Science days.

Been seeing it for nearly 2 decades. This is often the result when the motive is self instead of others (ie PhD or published, instead of to help the people studied).

Linking to a speech from a @necsi program that touches on the renormalization of complex systems via tools of statistical physics. Done correctly it is possible although “scalar measure” sounds inadequate. https://medium.com/@_NicT_/making-the-complex-coherent-d414908c6926?source=linkShare-191d0ae6b768-1526451710 …pic.twitter.com/QQaQ5qW5XA

To use propaganda to get a law passed: Select training data (news events) that imply x(target) causes y(bad thing). Drop training data that says no or reverse. Publicize selected data points repeatedly to force overfit in voters minds. Pass law memoralizing overfit that bans x.
