Lots of people are saying "the problem with FB is the business model", which is a way to absolve FB of its social responsibility. I don't think there's anything wrong with targeted ads as a business model.

Do not surveil users when they are not using your direct website.

That's also a problem of an organizational structure itself. Hierarchical organizations are great at scaling, not so much at nuance.

I don't think Facebook needs to access to your phone logs, email, sms and spy your geolocation at all time to send you targeted ads. There should be a sane red line not to cross in their paid ads business model. Their "People you may know" feature is so spooky!!!

Let them be punished by the free market. Unless they grew so large from their sins that there is no free market. If that's the case then let's just laugh and forget until next time.

Their argument there is that they’re doing it for the good of the user by exposing her to better/relevant/selected ads. This can’t be disrespect.

Wouldn't you say the "fundamental disrespect" you talk about is inherent to market ethics? You can try to patch it all you want but there's a natural gravitation towards any behaviour that maximizes profit in a market-based economy. It's just market efficiency optimization...
