Lots of people are saying "the problem with FB is the business model", which is a way to absolve FB of its social responsibility. I don't think there's anything wrong with targeted ads as a business model.

If they did it, would you say "the problem with this storage company is that its business model meant it had access to your stuff"? No, the problem is disrespecting the fundamental rights of customers. Which points to moral dereliction and may require regulations.

The problem is a fundamental disrespect of the rights of users in the pursuit of profit. Not any business model. Businesses should place protecting the people who depend on them *before* making money. And that's an ethics issue, not a business model issue.
