Every business has a compromise to make between protecting their customers and making money. For instance, it's not okay for a bank to pocket the money on your account just because it's under their control. It's not okay for a storage company to sell your stuff. Etc.

If they did it, would you say "the problem with this storage company is that its business model meant it had access to your stuff"? No, the problem is disrespecting the fundamental rights of customers. Which points to moral dereliction and may require regulations.

The problem is a fundamental disrespect of the rights of users in the pursuit of profit. Not any business model. Businesses should place protecting the people who depend on them *before* making money. And that's an ethics issue, not a business model issue.

Is there anything wrong with corporate surveillance--collecting, processing user data and using it to persuade, manipulate user behavior?

The $200+ billion market in personal information is founded on targeted ads. It is the fuel that drives targeted ads and thus it is worth money and is therefore leveraged as a business model. No targeted ads means much less personal information being sold to the highest bidder.

Microtargeting gets deceitful messages to the most vulnerable people without external scrutiny. Noone to fact check and correct them as in a normal ad.
-
Most advertising isn't fact checked. I would hazard a guess that fewer than 1% of ads are fact checked. And if they are it isn't by the platform running the ads, it is by a government agency.
