These applications will require to make available essentially all of our personal data to the algorithms, which implies considerable risks -- not just the end of privacy, but also the risk to let ourselves be manipulated and controlled by our algorithms (or by whoever owns them)

Thus the first step to getting AI to realize its full potential in service of humanity is to solve the problem of private & secure personal data mining. Would encryption provide a solution? Should the consumer own the physical hardware where the data is stored and the algo runs?

Getting a solid security & privacy layer *before* we get to building these advanced AI applications is arguably that which will determine whether we end up with an AI utopia or an AI dystopia.
