Organizations and processes, despite being designed and run by humans, don't have the capability for empathy that humans do. They have goals and values of their own. Which is why we must take deliberate steps to encode our values into what we create. No process is neutral.

In particular, the interactions and incentives of a social network should be designed purposefully, with human values in mind. Saying "we don't need to do this, we're just a platform, we're a tool, we're neutral" means that you are abdicating your responsibility to the world.

I think you should differentiate humans and humanity. Individualism has blurred species porpoise but that doesn't mean it's not, at least indirectly, affecting those organizations or processes.

this is a crude attempt to "codify" alienation which is simply a byproduct of capitalism.encoding human values within the framework of an exploitative system is a delusion.

Who's to say what values should be encoded? Historically we have a poor track record when it comes to our socially acceptable morals. Just look back ~50 years to see why. Who knows what our current value system will look like in the next 50. How do we encode future proof values?

Totally agree.. Organizations are living beings that emerge from the human/processes that make them (just as we emerge from our cells/organs/etc). They are a different type of life-form, with different values and goals than the humans that compose them.

Not all humans have the same level of empathy. I have met and worked with people with absolutely NO empathy. Real machines... So what’s the « right » value to encode. An average empathy?

There are even some recruitment companies who only hire managers who have emotional personality disorder. That is diagnosed by psychologist as the first step in their recruitment process, and if people do have skills for empathy, they don't get hired. Screening for psychopaths...

"No process is neutral" - fantastic stuff but the concept of neutral tech runs deep as a longstanding excuse in our society - how do we get from here to there? A consensus driven set of standards that processes can self rate/benchmark against?
