You should study history, and not just so that you don't repeat it -- mostly because our past explains how we got to our present, and to a large extent, it predetermines our future.

Trying to understand politics -- in particular geopolitics -- without studying history is like starting to read a 50-volume novel series at chapter 24 from book 18. You're just not going to be able to make sense of it, much less get a feel for where it might be going
