Define the ML community. Just the greater workforce that uses ML, or the community surrounding research? I would find it very surprising that being highly mathematical is rare at the upper echelons of research and implementation in the area.
Also math clearly defines where language can be vague, potentially misinterpreted. Though your point on mathematical obsfucation is well made. Think critically. Write to be understood: using extent of communication in words, math, graphics, tables.
ML attracts empirical pragmatists, theorists are often repelled!
Mathematics is the single communication form (that I know of at least) not subject to interpretation or context. The Rosetta Stone common to all.
No offense, but I feel like you didn’t really get the intent of the original tweet. Level of familiarity with math notation/conventions is variable & continuous, not binary. Also math/stats/ML/econ/physical sciences do tend to use different terms, conventions—ie, contextual.
Always more in two heads than one, maybe the same with algorithms&the next"s" AI generations...que sera sera...whatever will be will be...the future's not ours to see..., #algorithuman got talents!
