This is a strawman as it seems like you're suggesting that hyped press coverage of AI comes from research community, which I don't think is accurate. Eg the big language stuff recently was SQuAD and that was just crazy PR from Alibaba and MSFT. Not researchers overclaiming

Absolutely, researchers overclaim all the time, in papers, talks, and most of all in the press releases sent out by corporate labs and universities. It's only natural that there should be some pushback.
