I believe each of these 3 fundamental issues could go either way -- towards a better future or towards dystopia. That's why it is important to have these debates now. And anyone drowning out the conversation by drumming up fears of "existential risk" is doing us all a disservice

Democratization, augmentation, empowerment are good goals AND AI does pose existential risk. It's naive to think otherwise. As people begin to trust the 'objectiveness' and 'reliability of predictions', even well-meaning people could 'push the button' without knowing 'why'.
I watched a huge multinational bank replace an 45K rules AI policy-based loan approval system with an AI pricing tree. A rules-based loan shark. AI needs more philosophers and ethicists and fewer accountants. But it won't happen and all know it.

Not a fan of the "can go either way" argument and think the dystopian view is shortsighted. Mass manipulation can be a good thing, albeit disconcerting. Consider AI that made your food buying decisions by giving you coupons on foods that would help lower your cholesterol.

I think those dimensions.. 1) democritization <—>centralization 2) augmentation<—>replacement 3) empowerment<—>manipulation ..characterize both a short term trajectory set by narrow ai products & long term tradjectory set by AGI. = not an “either / or” scenario.
I think “AGI” might sort of be an attractive mis-branding option for the negative end of those opposites. Also, AGI will also be biased, if “we” ever get “there”.
