"We Alchemists are coming close to creating the Philosopher's Stone, the most impactful achievement of mankind -- maybe making everyone immortal, maybe wiping out all life. We know it's very dangerous, but we're committed to making it happen safely!" --16th century proto-chemist

It may make you sound Very Important in 2018, but it *will* sound pretty ridiculous in 100 years. Let's treat AI as science and engineering, not as some kind of mystical art.

If you can sketch out what an AGI would be, how it would work, & what would make it dangerous -- the way a physicist might have sketched out the A-bomb in the early 1930s -- I'll worry about it. Until then, I'll worry about the actual, describable risks of ML applications

Which are plenty, are largely absent from the public debate, in large part because of PR campaigns to make sci-fi scenarios that are profoundly disconnected from reality sound believable and scary. That discrepancy and the fear-mongering around AI are worrying in their own right

You've probably seen these recommendations for evaluating impacts of algorithmic decision making, a much more immediately relevant issue: https://ainowinstitute.org/aiareport2018.pdf …

May the fear-mongering be in fact a smokescreen to hinder the public debate that you mention?

I’m sure there are concerns that are more immediate, but do you really not think that the alignment problem is worth considering now rather than after the fact? Or are you saying there will never be a GAI with above human abilities?

I read @ESYudkowsky's criticism of your article "The impossibility of intelligence explosion". It specifically addresses this "we don't know how it's going to work yet, therefore it's not dangerous" point you make here. Have you responded yet? https://intelligence.org/2017/12/06/chollet/ …

Oh, we're still talking about this. Do you need a marketer on your team? LOL Google doesn't have a great history marketing products... some of my favorites died b/c of poor marketing (Google Wave) - BUT Google Pixel has some great campaigns, you should talk to their team for help

I feel like the PR campaigns are in large part due to the idea single entities trying to bring about AI in their org, and if "they" don't get to do it then "everything can go bad." It's quite cult-like and a perfect sales pitch. AGI will come from multiple sources at once.
