Knowledge development or discovery is an autonomous process, independent of its consequence. Managing the later is primarily a political process and has very little to do with the former.
Some people can sketch AGI and they cannot see the difference of that sketch with how a physicist might have sketched out the A-bomb in the early 1930s. You choose what you worry about, they choose what they worry about.

I disagree. If AGI will ever happen, it makes sense to prepare for it. The only reason not to prepare for AGI is if you believe it will never happen. We can work on current risks and prepare for future risks, which will increase in importance as tech advances.
