am i crazy to think extreme individual wealth is immoral? that in an ideal world, the billions gates has paid in donations should actually be managed by the people/govt?

Moral wealth is not wealth that's in the hands of the government, or the mega-rich, or even large numbers of middle-class people. Moral wealth is wealth that's invested in the future. And all of the above categories have the potential to mis-invest in tragic ways.

Yes but if money isn't well invested by X governement, people can choose to elect an other one (though the choice is very limited at a national level). But there're almost no practical way to take action against bad billionaires.

number of people less important than who those people are accountable to. also, i notice the europeans replying here seem to have more faith in the govt to make good decisions, the americans more faith in private orgs. maybe education differences?

I wonder how much this corresponds to different cultural attitudes about government vs. actual behaviors of government. The U.S. government visibly spends a lot of its money on military, many European governments visibly spend their money on healthcare.
